Saanich Peninsula Forested Estate

Design-Forward Masonry Renovation
Timeline

Jun '22 - Ongoing

Location

Saanich Peninsula

Client

HR Pacific

This residential renovation is defined by its diverse technical complexity. Masonry serves as the foundation of this transformation, with elements including a custom spa and pool integration, modern wood burning chimneys, and intricate water features. Working under a compressed timeframe alongside multiple trades, the project required frequent coordination during installation.

As part of a full-scale property overhaul, our work was central to redefining the flow and finish of the estate’s outdoor environment. Balancing a high-design vision with the practicalities of heavy material handling, our end result bridges the gap between luxury and durability.

Objective

  • Multifaceted Scope: Executing an expansive masonry program encompassing spas, pools, fireplaces, water features, and structural hardscaping.
  • Architectural Cohesion: Aligning diverse design elements into a comprehensive visual design.
  • Fast-Track Execution: Managing complex, heavy installations within accelerated timelines.

Unique Challenges

Technical Water Features

A significant portion of the mandate involved water-feature masonry, which requires a higher degree of planning for waterproofing and hydraulic integration. The sheer mass of the stone components requires creative installation strategies to ensure every piece was set with absolute precision while maintaining waterproofing membranes.

Restricted Coastal Access

The property’s oceanside location presented severe access constraints. With no viable route for heavy cranes or concrete trucks near the water’s edge, our team developed specialized manual and mechanical staging solutions to move and place hundreds of tonnes of material safely.

Interdisciplinary Coordination

Managing a high volume of work within a tight schedule required seamless communication with parallel tradespeople.

Technical Scope of Work

Our aim was to balance structural reliability with refined aesthetic detailing, ensuring each feature was built to withstand the coastal environment while meeting the designer’s vision.

Key Conservation Measures

  • Aquatic Masonry: Custom stone application for the spa and pool areas, requiring specialized bonding and sealant protocols.
  • Fireplaces and chimneys
  • Thermal Features: Construction of custom wood-burning fireplaces and chimneys designed for both performance and architectural impact.
  • Topographical Framing: Installation of stone steps and hardscaping elements to transition and define the property’s varied elevations.

Collaboration

This project required close alignment with a world-class design and build team. We collaborated extensively with:

  • HR Pacific (General Contractor) to manage site sequencing and trade timelines.
  • Paul Sangha Creative and NICOLEHOLLIS to ensure the masonry accurately reflected the sophisticated design intent.
  • Bedrock Natural Stone for the sourcing of custom and highly-detailed materials.

Results

The forested estate stands as a premier example of our ability to manage design-forward renovations under an accelerated timeline. By delivering a fully integrated masonry scope, from heavy water features to refined flatwork, this property showcases the range of masonry features that are possible to achieve.
